Day 37: Hate is not a Christian value

I had written a long, rant-like piece to post today about why I’m fed up with the people in my life who call themselves Christians, but voted for Trump, think undocumented immigrants should be deported, are anti-Muslim, and want to cut welfare, get rid of the ACA, and a whole host of other decidedly non-Christian things. But no one reads rants so I’ll make it pretty simple.

Jesus was a brown-skinned Middle Eastern man with the progressive idea that the poor should be cared for and all people have value. If Jesus were alive today not one damn one of you so-called Christians would treat him with respect, but you sure do like to invoke hate in his name. Because treating human beings like trash? That’s hate. Disrespecting people because they worship God differently? That’s hate. Actively going out of your way to make life more difficult for the needy? That’s hate. Supporting Donald Trump is an act of hate. ┬áSo if you call yourself a “Christian” but think Donald Trump is doing great things for America I strongly suggest you go back and read your Bible┬ábecause hate is not a Christian value and you are not a Christian. You’re actively working against everything Jesus believed in.

Day 36: Liberty is under attack and her attacker is Donald Trump

I took a week off from this blog. The time off was not because things weren’t happening that should be recorded, but because there was way too much. I got overwhelmed and then I got numb. Things didn’t seem to be all that out of the ordinary. Things started settling into normal. It hit me today that this is not normal and that no matter what we as Americans can’t even for a millisecond accept any of the things coming out of Washington and the White Hous as normal. Today it became clear in no uncertain terms that liberty is under attack and her attacker is the President of the United States. Today, Donald Trump banned selected media outlets from attending a briefing today thus controlling who could report on what was going on. Those who were banned? Organizations that have been calling the President out for his lies and misbehavior. The White House, after spending weeks trying to discredit the media, just gave up and straight out cut them from the picture. At the same time, the White House was asked the FBI to dispute the reports regarding Russia and Trump’s involvement.

The President of the United States wants to control the media and at the same time wants the FBI to lie for him.

There is no giving Trump a chance. There is no trying to understand this. The man and his crew are openly attempting to dismantle the United States and take away our rights, starting with the First Amendment. Our freedoms are in trouble. We’re in trouble.

Day 28: Leaking

I was watching daytime television today and despite my multitasking and not really paying attention something that was said stuck out to me. A conservative-leaning host mentioned that they were concerned about the precedent that the leaks and the reported leak that intelligence agents have been withholding information from the President set. The liberal-leaning host brought up how telling it is that it appears not even the intelligence community trusts the President and that’s terrifying and that the leaks are a way to protect the idea of transparency in leadership, thus protecting the American people from a dictatorship. I stopped multitasking as I found myself agreeing with both of them, but more leaning on the side of the dangerous precedent this all could set.

To be clear I think that considering how dangerous Donald Trump is and how he has routinely disrespected the Presidency by not going to intelligence briefings and being lax with security it probably isn’t a bad idea that sensitive information is being withheld from him. I don’t feel like Trump can be trusted with sensitive information. Hell, he might hand it over to Russia for all we know. However on the flip side I can understand that that is a dangerous precedent. What if in the future there is a president that is more presidential and more responsible, one who is qualified for the job but that various members of the intelligence community have an axe to grind? It shouldn’t be okay for them to just withhold information just because.

So what’s the balance? There needs to be a clear and present reason why the President shouldn’t be given information. That needs to be the standard. I think that, maybe, this Russia debacle is that clear and present reason why Trump is being denied but even as we deal with this disaster and this threat we need to be on guard for well-meaning choices of today screwing over tomorrow.

Day 24: Going numb

I spent a few days not writing much of substance for this blog. Frankly it was because I’ve gone a little numb to all of the things that Trump has been saying, doing, and the general disaster that I feel like our country is descending into. I haven’t really watched the news, instead choosing to read blogs on minimalism and look at cat memes. Tonight I mostly just watched live Tweets about the Grammys.

Tomorrow? I’ll wake up and try to reconnect to the world.
